Google Glass Still in Development

On Monday, Google CEO Eric Schmidt revealed that the company's smart eyewear is not dead and it is still working on Google Glass.

Earlier this year, Google ended the Glass Explorer program leading many to believe that Glass was a thing of the past. While many assumed that Glass was dead, even Google's announcement shed light on a future for the smart eyewear. "As we look to the road ahead, we realize that we've outgrown the lab and so we're officially "graduating" from Google[x] to be our own team here at Google. We're thrilled to be moving even more from concept to reality," said the Google Glass team at the time. "As part of this transition, we're closing the Explorer Program so we can focus on what's coming next. January 19 will be the last day to get the Glass Explorer Edition. In the meantime, we're continuing to build for the future, and you'll start to see future versions of Glass when they're ready."

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published Monday, Schmidt confirmed that the program is far from dead. He said, "We ended the Explorer program and the press conflated this into us canceling the whole project, which isn't true. Google is about taking risks and there's nothing about adjusting Glass that suggests we're ending it." Glass, said Schmidt, is "a big and very fundamental platform for Google" much like the company's self-driving car project. Instead of scraping the program, Google has appointed Tony Fadell, head of the Nest connected home division, to oversee the project and "make it ready for users." Fadell's work on Glass will be behind the scenes until a new, consumer-ready Google Glass is ready to make its debut.
